The rank insignia was moved from the collar to the middle of the chest as part of a well-intentioned shift to accommodate soldiers wearing body armor or vests. However, this placement has unintended consequences according to Hoagland. During promotion ceremonies, male leaders often have to remove and pin the rank insignia on the woman's chest, leading to uncomfortable situations where they may ask, "May I touch you?" This can put female soldiers in a position where they feel pressured to comply, even if they are uncomfortable with the touching.
